The gateway situated near the port of Mumbai was erected in 1927 to celebrate the visit of Queen Mary and King George V to India during the Delhi Durbar event. Gateway of India’s architect was George Wittet and the design was greatly inspired by Gujarat style which was prevalent in the 16th century.
